 *The Broward Lotus Sangha
and
The Broward Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society
Are pleased to invite you to a
MINDFUL HIKE IN DEERFIELD ISLAND PARK
Saturday, October 2, 2010
11:00 A.M.*

This event is free and open to all age groups so bring your friends and
family!

We will be walking slowly and mindfully while enjoying nature and learning
about native flora and fauna of Deerfield Island Park's two main trails: the
half-mile Coquina Trail, which includes an observation platform overlooking
the Intracoastal Waterway, and the Mangrove Trail, which includes a
boardwalk through a red and white mangrove swamp.

Accessible only by boat, this 56-acre island park is a Designated Urban
Wilderness Area that provides a critical habitat for the gopher tortoise and
is a nesting place for squirrels, raccoons and armadillos. Remnants of a
freshwater wetland are evident, although red and white mangroves are now
dominant. In 1983, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
declared Deerfield Island an official Gopher Tortoise Preserve. Both
migratory and indigenous sea birds use it as a roosting and feeding place.

There is a small shaded playground for the children to enjoy, as well as
restrooms and picnic tables with grills for our picnic. A free boat shuttle
provides transportation from the Sullivan Park dock to the island on the
hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (The last shuttle returning to the mainland
departs the island at 4:30 p.m.)
