Saturday, September 26, 2009
9:30 A.M. – 12:30 P.M.

This event is free and open to the public so bring your friends and family!

The Broward Lotus Sangha will be joining the Dade and Broward Chapters of the Florida Native Plant Society for a MINDFUL HIKE in Broward County's Long Key Natural Area. We will be walking slowly and mindfully while enjoying nature and learning about native flora and fauna.

At 157 acres, this is one of the largest nature preserves administered by Broward County. Archaeologists have traced human presence there to as far back as the Tequesta Nation. In addition, it was a refuge for native Americans fleeing U.S. troops during the Seminole Wars. Long Key encompasses some of the most significant archaeological, historical, and ecological resources within Broward County and has been labeled as "the best preserved archaeological record of 19th century Seminole life in Broward County." In more recent times, it has been the site of the Kapok Tree Inn restaurant, a Wild West theme park, and an exotic plant nursery. The public areas of the park consist of a half-mile paved trail through the hammock. We will also visit adjacent wetland areas normally not open to the public. Typical trees in the hardwood forest include live oak, red bay, paradise tree, satin leaf, strangler fig, hackberry, and the occasional cabbage palm and gumbo limbo. Wildlife in the area includes pileated woodpeckers, great horned owls, screech owls, ospreys, great egrets, herons, malachites, bobcats, foxes, and queen and zebra longwing butterflies. There are also several wetland marshes, man-made ponds and canals, which have become a haven for a variety of wetland birds including a very active bird roost/rookery area.

Difficulty Level: Easy on the trail--All Ages and fitness levels welcome. Moderate off the trail.

What To Bring/Wear: Sun and bug protection, hat, non-alcoholic beverages, closed shoes, snacks or brown bag lunch.
